چکیده

Deep shale natural gas deposits made accessible by new technologies are quickly becoming a demonstrative share of North America’s energy portfolio. The pace and scale of recent extraction overwhelms local and state planning and regulatory bodies and is exempted from national regulation. Extraction is dispersed and the full extent of cultural and environmental impact is equally dispersed and varies considerably. Additionally, extraction activities fluctuate and respond to global market considerations. Unlike traditional energy deposits and extraction footprints, shale gas offers dispersed and complex landscape challenges. These challenges are both cultural and environmental; And they are experienced individually, locally and regionally, despite being influenced by the global energy market. Our paper describes the local and regional challenges experienced by communities in the Marcellus Shale region of the eastern United States. We report on the ways, using a geodesign approach, in which we are working with communities to develop tools for comprehensive landscape planning and informed decision making. In this paper, we emphasize our research focused on visual and cultural resources.

Identification and Evaluation of Unconventional Hydrocarbon Reserves: Examples from Zagros and Central Iran Basins

It is notable that over the past decade, proven reserves of natural gas have dramatically increased as higher prices and advances in technology have turned previously unrecoverable resources into major sources of domestic production. Moreover, the decline in crude oil reserves has significantly slowed over the past decade. Therefore, there would be an end to the conventional hydrocarbon resourc...

Rock physics characterization of shale reservoirs: a case study

Unconventional resources are typically very complex to model, and the production from this type of reservoirs is influenced by such complexity in their microstructure. This microstructure complexity is normally reflected in their geophysical response, and makes them more difficult to interpret. Rock physics play an important role to resolve such complexity by integrating different subsurface di...

Controversies Regarding Costs, Uncertainties and Benefits Specific to Shale Gas Development

The shale gas exploration and development is now a delicate and controversial subject. It is often assumed that unconventional exploration and extraction automatically brings prosperity for local, national and regional economies. In this paper, we argue that shale gas development requires a contextualized understanding of regional issues. We are also trying to identify the opportunities and the...

Landscape Disturbance from Unconventional and Conventional Oil and Gas Development in the Marcellus Shale Region of Pennsylvania, USA

The spatial footprint of unconventional (hydraulic fracturing) and conventional oil and gas development in the Marcellus Shale region of the State of Pennsylvania was digitized from high-resolution, ortho-rectified, digital aerial photography, from 2004 to 2010. We used these data to measure the spatial extent of oil and gas development and to assess the exposure of the extant natural resources...

A Dilemma of Abundance: Governance Challenges of Reconciling Shale Gas Development and Climate Change Mitigation

Shale gas proponents argue this unconventional fossil fuel offers a ―bridge‖ towards a cleaner energy system by offsetting higher-carbon fuels such as coal. The technical feasibility of reconciling shale gas development with climate action remains contested. However, we here argue that governance challenges are both more pressing and more profound. Reconciling shale gas and climate action requi...
